Safe Protection for air-conditioning installers
The Shorguard SG4 Guardrail System from Whelan Plant, shown here, was used in an aggressive marine environment on a flat roof, with restricted access, to facilitate safe operations and to protect the installers of the air-conditioning and extractor units.

Shorguard SG4 freestanding, permanent guardrails have recently been installed by J P Whelan Plant in association with EC-EX Engineering at the Hampshire Scientific Offices at Portsmouth to provide safe and secure roof edge protection.
The provision of safe access for maintenance and service engineers necessitated the specification of a galvanised guardrail system which was strong and easy to install without damaging the existing felted flat roof. The Shorguard patented lifting shoe facilitated secure fixing and will enable the roof surface to be redressed, when required, with minimum disruption and major cost savings.
A major benefit of the Shorguard freestanding system is its flexibility in accommodating and protecting the existing air conditioning or process extraction ducts and pipe works without the need to remove or replace them.
Shorguard is a component system which can easily be assembled in the most restrictive environment and where access is limited. At Portsmouth, the equipment was successfully man handled to roof level without the need for costly scaffolding or craneage.

Southampton General Hospital
The Shorguard SG4 Freestanding Guardrail System has been used successfully on a number of roof areas at Southampton General Hospital to provide a safe and secure working environment for maintenance staff.
The logistics of getting the equipment to the roof areas created problems which were overcome by careful timing of the delivery, manhandling and craning the equipment into position. Any disruptions to the workings of the hospital were avoided.
Whalley Viaduct, near Clitheroe
The Shorguard SG2 parapet clamp overcame the problem of providing a quick safe solution for working access to the viaduct where Nuttalls had a nine week time slot to carry out track and maintenance work for Railtrack.

M23 - A25 Bridge
In order to comply with recent European legislation, the Dorking office of the Highways Agency recently awarded the Southampton main contractor, Dyer and Butler, a contract to replace the bridge parapets on the A25 bridge crossing the M23 where the M23 is in a 25m deep cutting.
The SG3 Shorguard system, supplied on hire by Whelan Plant, was chosen as the edge protection system to use because of its proven record as a quickly erected, strong system that provides the required workforce protection. By clamping the Shorguard to the existing stringcourse and being completely independent of the existing parapet, the replacement programme was completed on time using a safe method of working.
One of Many Hospital Projects
J.P. Whelan Plant is experienced in this market sector having previously installed the Shorguard SG4 Freestanding Guardrails at Lewisham, Royal Devon & Exeter, Addenbrooke's, Greenwich and Southampton General. All projects require careful attention to detail and precise co-ordination to ensure no disruption of the day to day running of the hospitals.
